Mentoring in Neuroscience Discovery at Sinai (MiNDS) is a community volunteer initiative based out of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Our program strives to make neuroscience education more engaging and accessible to empower and inspire students by extending our resources to local East Harlem schools and community centers.
Who we are
What we do
MiNDS promotes interactive and educational neuroscience experiences through on-site and off-site lessons. Our outreach programs include one-time lessons, a 12-week STEM mentoring program with New York Academy of Sciences, and involvement in Brain Awareness Week.
Do you love the brain, science, and fun interactive lessons? Any student, tech, postdoc, PI, lab manager, or staff member interested in getting involved in neuroscience outreach can learn various ways to get involved with MiNDS (Mentoring in Neuroscience Discovery at Sinai). The level of commitment varies based on the event or program you choose to get involved in, so feel free to reach out with any questions!
In partnership with STEM Mentoring at New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), MiNDS brings you our major mentoring opportunity that will start this January!
This is a 10-12 week long program ran by NYAS where volunteers, in pairs, teach a neuroscience-themed, 1-hour lesson at the same local school one afternoon a week. The curriculum is written beforehand, so do not worry if you are not fresh on your neuroscience. All sessions include lectures, demonstrations, and fun educational activities. The students you can work with are anywhere from 1st to 8th grade.
Apply by December 1st, 2015 in order to volunteer in 2016.
Brain Awareness Week is a worldwide event hosted by the DANA Foundation every March. This year MiNDS, in partnership with CEYE, is hosting the Fourth Annual Brain Fair at Mount Sinai. Students, families, and community members can come tour our interactive booths to learn about neuroscience on March 15, 2016. If you would like to volunteer to host a booth as an individual or as a foundation please contact us.
