Neurotrophin Actions in CNS and PNS

My research interests focus on understanding the mechanisms by which neurotrophic growth factors, including nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), regulate nervous system development and function. BDNF and NGF have been implicated in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disease, neuropsychiatric illness, CNS injury, and obesity. We try to identify contributions made by specific neurotrophin-regulated gene products to neurotrophin actions, characterizing their effects on depression, memory, and energy balance. We study these proteins (e.g. the secreted protein VGF or the cell adhesion protein L1) using a variety of cellular, molecular, biochemical, neuroanatomical, and behavioral approaches, often employing novel knockout, transgenic, and knockin mouse models.
